Jill: Hello, welcome to Fashion Forecasts, a new monthly web series , brought to you by Footloose Shadyside, Pittsburgh’s premier women’s shoe salon. I am Jill Rubinstein, owner of Footloose Shadyside and I would like to introduce our special guest, Nicole Barley, Fashion Editor of Whirl Magazine. Today, Nicole and I will discuss one of the hottest trends for Spring 2012….WEDGES!
Nicole: Wedges are pretty amazing shoes actually, they date back to the 16th century. In Italy, Venetian ladies wore chopines that were so tall the women who wore them required the support of an escort to walk. In the 1930’s, wedges made their way into the American wardrobe with beautiful designs by Salvatore Ferragamo and they have been popular for ever since….
I personally love an espadrille, I think they’re fun and whimsical, the perfect shoe for summer. Not only that, but I think wedges are comfortable to wear, while still elongating the leg.
Jill: One of the finest examples of this trend is by designer Donald J Pliner in this cork and silver elastic platform wedge. Donald has incorporated a unique design element to the natural cork by adding silver flecks. Other notable details include the gladiator influence of the silver elastic strapping complimented by the back zipper.
Nicole: That shoe is gorgeous! And it fits perfectly with the bohemian, hippie-inspired styles that we saw on the Spring runways. Other great outfit options with a wedge include a midi-length skirt with a fitted top, a floaty blouse with skinny jeans or even a beautiful sundress. Wedges are a really versatile style of shoe.
